ASA 101 Basic Keelboat
The ASA 101 Basic Keelboat course is a full length beginner level sailing course, leading to certification from the American Sailing Association. In this 1 day course participants will learn how to skipper a keelboat, by day in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Topics that you will learn include: boating and sailing terminology, sailing theory, basic seamanship and navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards. This course also emphasizes boating safety and facilitates the Hawaii State required boating safety education courses which are approved and provided by BoatUS and BoaterExam.com
Course tuition includes on-water instruction, land based knowledge review and written exam. At the end of this course participants will be awarded the ASA Basic Keelboat 101 certificate which is recognized by boat rental companies worldwide.
**Please Note:** To get the most out of this course, participants are required to obtain and thoroughly review the textbook Sailing Made Easy (available digitally or hard copy on our website) and complete the review questions in the textbook prior to class. ASA.com also lists resources for self study and participants are also required to watch ASA's free introductory sailing course video Your First Sail. This course takes place mostly on-water with sailing practice. There is only limited time for on-land knowledge review.

Specific Details:
- **Days & Times:** Once per month, generally Saturday and Sunday 8:30am to 5:30pm
- **Course schedule:** Theory discussion + sailing practice in the morning, bring food and drink with you as we will not return to land for a lunch break.
- **Meeting place:** On the boat, Kewalo Basin, Slip D112
- **What to bring & wear:** You shouldn't get too wet, but dress for the sun and a little spray: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and maybe a towel. Boat shoes or barefoot on the boat. If you think you might get seasick, please take medicine 30 minutes prior.
- **Parking:** free parking near the beach or $1/hr pay parking
*Please note: This is a fun learning experience on a small boat. You will be steering the boat and trimming the sails. This is an open group activity with a minimum of 2 people. Minimum age for this course is 10 years old.*
