ASA 105 Coastal Navigation
Learn about the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. This is a classroom course, taught in the Sail Hawaii classroom. It is recommended that students take this course along with ASA Bareboat Cruising 104. This course is a pre-requisite for ASA Advanced Coastal Cruising 106. Navigational theory topics include: Understanding charts, publications and the use of navigational tools, plotting dead reckoning courses with magnetic and true bearings, waypoints, lines of positions, visual fixes, running fixes, current sailing (set and drift), danger bearings, aids to navigation, tides and currents as it pertains to navigation.
This course meets for 3 evenings for about 3 hours each session. The first two sessions are study and practice sessions and the third session is the written test. Individual self study is highly recommended. The official ASA course book, training chart, self study DVD and navigation materials are available from ASA and Sail Hawaii. The reference text, Dutton's Navigation is a Sail Hawaii recommendation only.
