ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising
The ASA Advanced Coastal Cruising 106 course is a live aboard sailing adventure around Hawaii. Learn how to be the skipper of a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered keelboat of 35 feet in length, during a 48+ hour cruise in near coastal waters, by day or night in any conditions. Topics covered in this standard include: Cruise planning, advanced sail theory, steering forces, advanced sail control, weather prediction using clouds and instruments, boat systems maintenance, coastal navigation practice including chart plotting by visual sighting and interpretation of navigation aids, docking and anchoring, health and safety, emergency operations and seamanship are discussed and practiced. Learning while sailing, plenty of time is allowed for enjoying the beauty of cruising under sail in Hawaii and enjoying our destinations.
This course emphasizes boating safety and facilitates the Hawaii state required boating safety education courses which are approved and provided by BoatUS and BoaterExam.
At the end of this course participants will be awarded the ASA Advanced Coastal Cruising 106 certificate and optional International Proficiency Certificate which are recognized by boat charter companies worldwide.

Specific Details:
- **Days & Times:** Course is scheduled once per month, 3 days generally over a weekend (Friday - Sunday or Saturday - Monday)
- **Course schedule:** Theory discussion and planning meeting Friday afternoon, depart for sailing voyage early Saturday for overnight voyage, anchor and/or harbor visit and return by Sunday evening according to our plan.
- **Meeting place:** Ilikai Hotel, courtyard by the Aroma Cafe / Ala Wai harbor
- **What to bring & wear:** Dress for sun and spray. Even in Hawaii it can be chilly offshore so bring layers and foul weather gear. Boat shoes highly recommended on the boat. If you think you might get seasick, please take medicine 30 minutes prior.
- **Parking:** No overnight parking at Ala Wai harbor so it is recommended that you arrive by taxi/ Uber.
*Please note: Pre-requisite for this course is ASA 104 and 105. If you have previous sailing experience, you may challenge up to the ASA 101 and 103 standards and join this course as the ASA 104 course. Please see the ASA 104 and 105 courses and 101 and 103 challenge courses for details. This is a fun learning experience on a small boat, living in close proximity with other people. You will be steering the boat and trimming the sails. This is an open group activity with a minimum of 2, maximum of 4 people. Minimum age for this course is 16 years old.*
